Glass Door Configurations and Frame Systems

A glass door specification starts with the opening method, because it fixes the profile series, the hardware grade and the glass make-up. Four configurations account for roughly 90% of export orders from Foshan and Guangdong production: single/double hinged leaf, sliding, lift-and-slide, and framed commercial entrance.

Opening types and where each is used

Configuration Typical leaf size (mm) Glazed area Application
Hinged single leaf 900 × 2100 – 1000 × 2400 55–70% Entry, balcony, interior
Hinged double leaf (French) 1400 × 2400 – 1800 – 2600 60–75% Patio, terrace, garden
Sliding 2-track 1200 × 2400 per leaf 70–85% Balcony, pool enclosure
Lift-and-slide 1500 × 3000 per leaf 80–90% Wide openings, coastal villas
Framed commercial entrance 1000 × 2400 – 1800 × 2700 80–90% Retail, office lobby
Frameless tempered + patch fittings 900 × 2400 95%+ Shopfront, showroom

Profile series and wall thickness

Export frames in this category are almost entirely 6063-T5 aluminum alloy, with 6061-T6 used only for structural mullions above 3 m or for heavy lift-and-slide leaves. Measured mechanical values on 6063-T5: tensile strength ≥ 160 MPa, yield ≥ 110 MPa, elongation ≥ 8%, Brinell hardness ≥ 58 HB. Wall thickness is where price and performance diverge:

Wall thickness is verified with an ultrasonic thickness gauge at three points per profile (web, inner flange, outer flange) at incoming inspection. Tolerance accepted: ±0.1 mm against drawing.

Aluminum Glass Door: Alloy, Thermal Break and Glazing

The aluminum glass door is the default export build: a thermally broken frame carrying an insulating glass unit. Thermal performance is governed by two variables only — the polyamide strip geometry and the glazing build-up. Getting both right moves the whole-door U-value from 3.4 down to 1.3 W/m²K.

Thermal break strip specification

The break is PA66 GF25 (polyamide 66 with 25% glass fibre). It is poured or strip-inserted, then crimped into the profile. Strip width is the single biggest lever on frame Uf value:

Strip width Frame Uf (W/m²K) Whole-door U-value Typical market
14.8 mm 2.6–2.9 2.4–2.8 Southeast Asia, Middle East
20.0 mm 2.1–2.4 1.9–2.2 Southern Europe, Australia
24.0 mm 1.8–2.1 1.6–1.9 North America, NZ
30.0 mm + foam fill 1.4–1.7 1.3–1.6 Passive house / cold climate
34.0 mm multi-chamber 1.2–1.4 1.0–1.3 Central Europe, Canada

PA66 GF25 strip properties to require on the test report: tensile strength ≥ 80 MPa at 23°C, Charpy impact ≥ 35 kJ/m², heat deflection temperature ≥ 240°C, and linear expansion coefficient 2.3 × 10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ — close enough to aluminum (2.4) that the crimp joint survives thermal cycling from −30°C to +80°C.

Glazing build-ups and measured values

Build-up Ug (W/m²K) SHGC Rw (dB) Weight (kg/m²)
5 mm single tempered 5.8 0.82 29 12.5
5 + 12A + 5 2.7 0.72 31 25.0
5 + 20A + 5 2.5 0.70 33 25.0
6 + 12Ar + 6 Low-E 1.5 0.38 34 30.0
6 + 16Ar + 6 Low-E + warm edge 1.3 0.35 35 30.0
5 + 9A + 5 + 9A + 5 triple 1.1 0.52 36 37.5
6.38 laminated + 12Ar + 6 Low-E 1.4 0.34 38 35.0
Argon retention: insulating glass units lose 0.5–1.0% of argon per year through the secondary seal. Specify butyl primary seal + polysulfide or silicone secondary, and require a gas concentration certificate above 90% at dispatch. Units below 80% after three years is the standard EN 1279 failure threshold.

Glass safety processing

Sliding Glass Doors: Track, Panel Weight and Opening Widths

Sliding glass doors are specified by three numbers: number of tracks, per-leaf weight capacity, and the clear opening width. Undersized rollers are the most common field failure — a 120 kg rated roller under a 145 kg leaf will deform its bearing in 18–24 months.

Track systems and load ratings

System Tracks Max leaf weight Max leaf size Air class (EN 12207)
Standard 2-track 2 120 kg 1200 × 2600 Class 3
Heavy 2-track 2 150 kg 1400 × 2800 Class 4
3-track multi-slide 3 180 kg 1500 × 3000 Class 4
Lift-and-slide 2–4 300 kg 1800 × 3200 Class 4
Frameless sliding 2 100 kg 1000 × 2500 Class 2

Roller specification: stainless 304 or nylon-coated bearing wheel, Ø 42–55 mm, two-wheel bogie for leaves above 100 kg. Operating force measured to EN 13115 should stay below 50 N for a 100 kg leaf; above that, the roller or the track profile is undersized.

Clear opening and sightline math

Net clear opening for a 2-track slider is 50% of the total frame width minus stile overlap. For a 3000 mm wide opening with 60 mm interlock stiles, the clear passage is 1470 mm. On a 3-track 3-panel slider the same opening yields 1960 mm. Where the design brief calls for a barrier-free 900 mm passage, a 2-track slider needs a total width of at least 1920 mm.

Interior Glass Door: Sightline, Acoustic Rating and Hardware

The interior glass door is judged on three criteria: how much light it passes between rooms, how much sound it stops, and how the leaf behaves after 100,000 cycles. Thermal performance is irrelevant here, so the budget goes into acoustic laminate and hardware.

Acoustic performance data

Glazing Rw (dB) C / Ctr (dB) Speech privacy Add-on cost /m²
6 mm single tempered 29 −1 / −3 None base
6 + 12A + 6 33 −1 / −4 Low +$18
6.38 laminated + 12A + 6 37 −2 / −5 Medium +$32
8.38 laminated + 12A + 6.38 lam 40 −2 / −6 High +$46
10.76 acoustic laminated 42 −2 / −7 Confidential +$68

Acoustic performance of the assembled door is typically 2–4 dB below the glass rating, because the weakest path is the perimeter sealing, not the pane. Requiring three-side compression gaskets with magnetic or adjustable cam hinges recovers 2 dB of that loss. An automatic drop-seal at the threshold recovers a further 3–5 dB and costs $14–22 per leaf.

Hardware cycle ratings

Frame finish for interiors

Interior frames use thinner sections (1.2–1.4 mm) with narrower 25–40 mm sightlines. Finish options in descending order of wear resistance: anodized AA15 (15 µm), powder coat 60–80 µm, wood-grain sublimation transfer (2000 h UV stability on Qualicoat Class 1 base), and PVDF 70% resin for wet rooms. Wood-grain transfer adds $12–18/m² but is the requested finish on roughly 35% of European interior orders.

Commercial Glass Door: Traffic Grade and Code Data

A commercial glass door is dimensioned by pedestrian throughput and the applicable building code, not by aesthetics. The two numbers that drive the specification are cycles per day and the required clear opening under accessibility rules.

Traffic grade to hardware mapping

Traffic level Cycles/day Hinge/pivot grade Closer Glass make-up
Light (office) ≤ 200 EN 1935 Gr 11 EN 1154 EN3 10 mm tempered
Medium (retail) 200–800 EN 1935 Gr 13 EN 1154 EN4 12 mm tempered
Heavy (mall, transit) 800–2500 EN 1935 Gr 14 EN 1154 EN5 12 mm tempered / 6+6 lam
Severe (airport, hospital) ≥ 2500 Floor spring + pivot Automatic operator EN 16005 8+8 laminated

Code and accessibility data

Budget note: a commercial entrance at heavy traffic grade costs roughly $380–$520/m² against $230–$330/m² for a residential exterior set. The delta is floor springs, heavier frames and 12 mm glazing, not the profile.

For properties where a garage or shopfront also needs glazed aluminium, see the insulated glass garage door specs data sheet.
