6063-T5 Extrusions, 2.0 mm Wall

The sliding patio door frame is extruded from 6063-T5 aluminum billet with a minimum wall thickness of 2.0 mm on structural members (sash rails, meeting stiles, sill track) and 1.4 mm on non-structural trim. Tensile strength is 160 MPa minimum, yield 110 MPa minimum. Sash depth is 100 mm for the 2-track system and 165 mm for the 3-track system; both accept glass from 20 mm to 32 mm overall thickness. Each sliding sash runs on two stainless steel tandem rollers rated at 120 kg per pair, adjustable plus/minus 5 mm in height from the interior face.

Thermal Break and Surface Finishes

The thermal break is a 24 mm PA66 GF25 polyamide strip (glass-fiber reinforced, C-shaped) rolled into the inner and outer extrusions. Frame U-value measured per NFRC 100 is 2.2 W/m2K for the 2-track frame and 2.4 W/m2K for the 3-track frame. ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 Zone Compliance

ENERGY STAR 7.0 (effective October 2023) requires doors to meet U-factor and SHGC limits that vary by climate zone. A patio door is classed as a door when glazing exceeds 50 percent of the area, which applies to all configurations on this page. The double-silver low-E build-up satisfies the Northern zone; the single-silver build-up satisfies the Southern zone. For the Northern zone, the 0.30 U-factor build-up with SHGC 0.27 passes because the SHGC limit in that zone is 0.40 with a U-factor trade-off path.

SHGC for Southern-zone orders: specify the “solar-control low-E” coating variant on the PI sheet. Standard single-silver low-E ships at SHGC 0.40, which does not meet the Southern 0.25 limit. The solar-control variant adds USD 6-9 per m2 of glass and holds VT at 0.55.

4. Aluminum Sliding Door Configurations and Track Design

Standard vs Lift-and-Slide Mechanics

The standard aluminum sliding door runs the sash directly on tandem rollers with a brush-seal perimeter; maximum sash weight is 240 kg and maximum sash size is 1.8 x 2.6 m. The lift-and-slide system raises the sash 6 mm onto its rollers when the handle rotates 180 degrees, compressing a continuous EPDM gasket in the closed position. Air infiltration on the lift-and-slide is 0.06 cfm/ft2 at 75 Pa versus 0.15 cfm/ft2 on the standard system, which is why lift-and-slide is the default recommendation north of climate zone 5 and for any sash wider than 1.5 m.

Rule of thumb for meeting-stile sightlines: the 2-track interlock presents a 62 mm sightline; the 3-track presents 92 mm because of the third rail. For view-driven projects specify the slim 45 mm interlock option, which derates design pressure from DP65 to DP50.

Custom Sizes and Tolerances

Any width from 1.2 m to 12 m and height from 1.9 m to 3.0 m can be produced without tooling charges. Manufacturing tolerance is plus/minus 1.5 mm on frame diagonals. Heights above 2.6 m automatically move to the 2.5 mm wall sash and double-silver low-E is replaced by heat-strengthened laminated on the exterior lite when the glass area per lite exceeds 3.6 m2, per ASTM E1300 load calculations.

6. Patio Sliding Door for Hurricane Zones (HVHZ)

Miami-Dade NOA and Florida Product Approval

For High-Velocity Hurricane Zone counties (Miami-Dade, Broward) the patio sliding door is supplied under a Miami-Dade NOA with the following test evidence: large and small missile impact per TAS 201/203, cyclic wind pressure per TAS 203, and uniform static air per TAS 202. The impact build-up is 8 mm tempered + 16 mm argon + 5+1.52PVB+5 laminated low-E, with a reinforced 3.0 mm interlock and stainless steel anti-lift blocks every 600 mm.

Non-HVHZ Coastal Orders

Outside HVHZ counties, most Gulf and Atlantic coast projects specify DP50 with the standard laminated build-up (5+12A+5 laminated inner) rather than the full NOA package; this keeps the surcharge at USD 18-24/m2 instead of USD 38-52/m2. Minimum order quantity is 20 m2 of door area, which can be mixed across configurations and finishes in one container. Production lead time is 30-40 days from drawing approval: 12 days for profile extrusion and coating, 10 days for glass processing, 8 days for assembly and QC. Payment is 30 percent T/T deposit against PI, 70 percent against B/L copy; irrevocable L/C at sight is accepted for orders above USD 80,000. When Each Material Wins

Vinyl leads on frame U-value and first cost in mild climates, but its thermal expansion (2.6x aluminum) causes sash binding on wide panels and it cannot be produced beyond 1.2 m sash width. Wood-clad leads on interior aesthetics at 3-5x the landed cost and requires refinishing cycles in humid climates. Thermal-break aluminum is the only option that holds DP50+ at sash widths above 1.5 m, which is why production builders and multi-family projects use it for 8 ft and wider openings.
